What "Low Fat" Means, and Why the Type of Fat Still Matters
Fat provides more than twice the energy per gram of protein or carbohydrate, so a low-fat food is one that keeps this contribution modest, useful when managing overall calorie intake. But fat itself isn't inherently bad: unsaturated fats, found in oily fish, nuts, seeds, and plant oils, genuinely support heart health, while the NHS explains that saturated fat, more common in fatty meat, butter, and many processed foods, is the type worth limiting for cardiovascular reasons.
Comparing Low-Fat Foods Fairly
Lean cuts of fish and seafood, most fruit and vegetables, and many bread and cereal staples naturally sit at the lower end of the fat scale. The British Heart Foundation's guide to reading food labels is a good reference for checking a food's real total fat and saturated fat figures side by side, since a food can be genuinely low in total fat while still deriving a large share of it from saturates.
Most people underestimate how much a day of Low Fat eating actually adds up to. Our food nutritional values calculator keeps a running total so nothing slips through unnoticed.
