Why Salt Is Worth Watching
The NHS recommends adults eat no more than 6g of salt a day, roughly a teaspoon, since a diet consistently high in salt is linked to raised blood pressure and, over time, a higher risk of heart disease and stroke. Most of the salt in a typical UK diet doesn't come from a salt shaker at the table, it's already in the food before it reaches your plate, which is exactly why comparing the real figure on a label or a page like this matters more than instinct.
Where Salt Tends to Hide, and Where It Doesn't
Condiments and sauces and takeaway and ready meals are both categories where salt content can vary enormously between two very similar-looking products, worth checking individually rather than assumed. Fresh fruit and vegetables, by contrast, are almost always naturally low in salt. The British Heart Foundation's guide to reading food labels and the Food Standards Agency's own traffic-light system both use the same real thresholds this page does.
However much Low Salt food ends up on your plate, our food value calculator keeps an accurate running total of it alongside everything else.
