About Food Calorie Calculator
A free, UK-focused calorie tool, built out in the open
Food Calorie Calculator (foodcaloriecalculator.co.uk) exists to answer one question quickly and honestly: how many calories are in the food you’re actually eating?
Most calorie databases are built around generic, US-centric entries. This one is built for the UK; the foods you recognise from your weekly shop and your Friday night takeaway sit alongside everyday staples. A full English, fish and chips, a Sunday roast, a supermarket meal deal, next to bananas, chicken breast and porridge oats.
What this site does
- Instant calorie calculator: Combine foods and portions for a clear calorie total in seconds.
- A growing UK food library: Individual, in-depth pages for hundreds of foods, each with calories per 100g and per common UK portion.
- Supporting tools: Calculators (BMR, TDEE, calorie deficit and more) to put those numbers in context.
Why the UK focus matters
A “medium apple” and a “large fries” don’t mean the same thing on both sides of the Atlantic, and branded products differ entirely by market. Grounding the data in UK sources and UK portions means the numbers reflect what’s genuinely on your plate, not a rough American equivalent.
Who’s behind it
Food Calorie Calculator is an independent project built and maintained by Saidul Islam Khan Samir, an SEO specialist and web developer, and founder of the digital marketing agency The Khan Digital.
This site started as a passion project. I build web tools for a living and for the love of it, and I kept running into the same gap: calorie databases made for the US, not for the way people in the UK actually eat. So I built the calculator and the food library myself, with one non-negotiable priority: every number is traceable to an authoritative source, and the data reflects real UK foods and portions.
I want to be completely straight about what this site is: I’m not a nutritionist or a dietitian, and this site is not a source of medical or dietary advice. What it is is a carefully sourced, transparent, UK-focused calorie reference. My expertise is in building accurate, well-structured, honestly-sourced web tools, and that’s exactly what this is.
How I keep it trustworthy
I take accuracy seriously because people use this information to make real decisions. So the whole site is built on transparency rather than claimed authority:
Standards in brief
- Every calorie figure is drawn from recognised food-composition datasets, chiefly the UK’s official CoFID (McCance & Widdowson) and USDA FoodData Central.
- Branded and takeaway items use manufacturers’ published nutrition data where available.
- Dietary context is grounded in guidance from the NHS, SACN, WHO, the BDA, the British Heart Foundation and the British Nutrition Foundation.
- Pages show when they were last updated, and I correct errors quickly.
You can see exactly how every figure is produced, and every source I use, on the Methodology page. That transparency is the foundation this entire site is built on.
An honest note on the numbers
Calorie figures here are careful estimates, not lab measurements of the specific item in your hand; natural foods vary, and portions differ. They’re an excellent guide for everyday decisions, but this site provides information, not medical or dietary advice. Please read the Medical Disclaimer.
