5 Everyday Meals That Add Up to 30g of Fibre a Day
The NHS recommends 30g of fibre a day for adults, and our own highest-fibre foods ranking answers a different question, which single food packs the most fibre per 100g. Neither tells you what a real day actually looks like. Here’s one, built from five real, ordinary meals in our database, that genuinely adds up past 30g.
A real day, added up meal by meal
- Breakfast, Overnight Oats (1 jar, 250g): 7.5g
- Lunch, Baked Beans on Jacket Potato (1 potato, 350g): 10.5g
- Snack, Raspberries (1 portion, 80g): 5.2g
- Dinner, Wholemeal Pasta (1 portion, 180g): 5.76g, plus Peas (3 tbsp, 80g): 4.08g
- Real day total: 33.04g
Why this framing is different from a leaderboard
None of these five are the single highest-fibre food in our database, that title goes to foods like popcorn and dark chocolate, covered in our 8 Foods Highest in Fibre, Ranked. What these five have going for them is that they’re a genuinely realistic day, breakfast, lunch, a snack and dinner, not a single serving of the single most concentrated food you’d ever find. Add or swap a meal and the total moves with it, use the figures here as a real, worked example, not a fixed formula. Beans and lentils are one of the easiest swaps: an 80g portion of cooked green lentils or canned black beans gives about 6g of fibre, and our high fibre beans, lentils and pulses list ranks the rest. For how dried, canned and cooked versions compare, see which beans and lentils have the most fibre.
Where you will see it used on this site
Every food shown here has its own real, live page with its own real fibre figure. The separate legal question, which foods can carry the words “high fibre” on a label, is covered in What Does “High Fibre” Actually Mean? Our calculator‘s own Meal Builder tab lets you build a real day like this one and see your own running fibre total as you go.
