Tracking Macros Without an App: the Hand-Portion Method

You don’t need an app open at every meal to have a real sense of your macros. The hand-portion method, developed by Precision Nutrition, uses your own hand as a built-in measuring tool, no scale, no logging, no phone out at the table.

The four hand measurements

  • Palm (protein): roughly 130–145kcal per portion
  • Cupped hand (carbs): roughly 110–120kcal per portion
  • Clenched fist (vegetables): roughly 25kcal per portion
  • Thumb (fats): roughly 90–100kcal per portion

How accurate this actually is

It’s genuinely an estimate, not an exact figure, but Precision Nutrition’s own research puts it at roughly 95% as accurate as more meticulous tracking methods, for a fraction of the effort. Because it scales to your own hand, it also self-adjusts to your own body size without any extra maths.

When to reach for a real number instead

A hand-portion estimate is genuinely enough for most everyday meals. When you want an exact figure for one specific food, a new recipe, or a meal you’re deliberately dialling in, our own calculator‘s search does that in seconds, no app install needed, just the food’s real name. It also works just as well eating out, with no menu calorie count in front of you, see Eating Out Without Blowing Your Calorie Budget.

Where you will see it used on this site

Search any food directly on our homepage for its real per-100g and per-serving figures, or build a full meal on the Meal Builder tab, see a real worked example in Building a Meal with the Meal Builder.
